Model Maker

Shift: Days

Essential Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Review concept, engineering drawings or Design Brief from Client, Sales, Project Management, Design, Development or Engineering.
  • Review and ensure all pertinent information related to the prototype package & design built intent is received and relayed.
  • Propose adjustments and/or design changes to simplify, or improve the idea/design (DFM)
  • Research/develop new fabrication techniques throughout the modeling stage to simplify the process or find ways to develop or assemble the model efficiently; communicate process to Key stakeholders e.g. Design, Engineering, Production, Project management and other team members.
  • Modify detailed drawings using Solidworks or AutoCAD as necessary.
  • Create cut files for fabricating and/or CNC using Solidworks and CamWorks, or AutoCad and Toolpath.
  • Fabricate and cut all parts and when required cut blanks for CNC.
  • Fabricate work aids such as fixtures for own use as well as the use of others.
  • CNC and cut parts using a Table Saw as needed.
  • Conduct edge finishing, sanding and/or buffing.
  • Prepare set-ups according to established and documented safe working practices.
  • Assemble all parts to create the models
  • Interact with Design and Engineering and assist Project Management and Production Teams to help those teams execute production
  • Effectively communicate with customers, internal departments and vendors as required.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Documentation of all prototype version via Revision Ticketing system & follow up for the completed revisions to finalize the prototype
  • Active participation in Departmental activities such as 5S, Health & safety initiatives & any Visual controls tools assigned

Skills Required:

  • Related college or university certificate/diploma/degree (Industrial Design Program);
  • Minimum 5 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate various shop equipment including but not limited to Table saw, CNC,
  • Router, Grinder, Lathe and Milling Machine.  Must be safety conscience.
  • Ability to read various measuring instruments in metric and imperial increments including but not limited to Tape Measure, Rulers, and Calipers.  Ability to read and understand technical drawings and build to completion from those drawings.
  • Must have basic knowledge of MS Outlook, Industrios; MS Excel
  • Spreadsheet software and MS Word Processing software. 
  • Individual should have intermediate to advanced Solidworks/Camworks and/or AutoCad/Toolpath experience and knowledge.
  • Must have the ability to problem solve and find cost efficient solutions to problems or modifications that may arise.
  • Must be able to collaborate with various departments and locations with regards to the project you are working on or other projects that require your input.
  • Must have strong Organizational skills & ability to track versions of prototypes
